A slack canvas is one of the more quietly alarming things that can happen to an oil or acrylic painting. The surface loses its resistance, brush marks from decades ago start to look like topography, and every ripple catches light in a way the artist never intended. Most people assume it means an expensive intervention, but the reality is more nuanced. Some canvases respond beautifully to the simplest of adjustments; others have underlying problems that no quick fix will address. Knowing which situation you are dealing with saves time, money, and in some cases the painting itself. This guide walks through the canvas key method in practical detail, then sets out the specific conditions under which a full re-stretch over new bars is the only honest answer.

What causes a canvas to go slack in the first place

Canvas fabric, whether linen or cotton, is hygroscopic: it absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air. In a centrally heated room the relative humidity can drop to 30 percent in winter and climb past 65 percent in summer. Each cycle tightens and then loosens the weave. Over years the cumulative effect is a gradual, permanent loss of tension. A painting that has lived above a radiator for two decades, or that has spent time in an uninsulated storage unit, will show this clearly. Glue-size grounds and older oil grounds also become more rigid with age, which means the fabric itself carries more of the dimensional stress and loses elasticity faster. The slack you are seeing is nearly always the result of many small environmental events, not one single incident.

Canvas keys: what they are and how they work

Keys, sometimes called wedges or corner wedges, are small triangular or trapezoidal pieces of hardwood, usually oak or beech, that fit into the mitred slots at each interior corner of a wooden stretcher bar frame. Most commercially made stretcher bars ship with eight keys: two per corner. Driving them gently inward with a tack hammer expands the corner joint, which incrementally increases the diagonal measurement of the frame and therefore the tension of the fabric stretched over it. A quarter-turn of movement at each corner translates to roughly one to two millimetres of expansion. That sounds negligible, but it is often enough. The method works because good stretcher bars are designed to expand; the mortise-and-tenon corners are deliberately not glued, allowing exactly this adjustment. Bars from manufacturers such as Frederix or Winsor & Newton follow this convention, as do the hand-made bar systems used by most professional conservation suppliers.

Step-by-step: keying out a slack canvas correctly

Remove the painting from any frame or hanging hardware first. Lay it face-down on a clean, padded surface, a folded cotton blanket works well, with nothing touching the paint film. Inspect the corners: keys should already be present in the slots. If they are missing, source replacements that match the slot width before proceeding. Begin at one corner and tap each key inward by approximately two millimetres using a light tack hammer or the handle of a screwdriver. Work diagonally opposite, so after the first corner go to the corner across from it, then the remaining two. This cross-pattern prevents the frame from racking to one side. After one full round, turn the canvas face-up and hold it at an angle to raking light. If the slack has resolved, stop. If ripples remain, do a second round of gentle taps. Never force keys hard in a single session: the fabric needs time to accommodate the new tension, and excessive force can split the bar joint or, worse, crack a brittle ground layer. Leave the canvas flat overnight and re-evaluate in natural light the following morning.

The limits of keying: when it simply will not hold

Keys solve a tension problem only when the bars themselves are sound and the fabric is still dimensionally stable enough to respond. There are several conditions under which keying is ineffective or actively harmful. First, if the stretcher bars are warped, bowed along their length, or have cracked joints, driving keys further will stress the wood at the point of failure rather than expand it evenly. Second, if the canvas has been re-stretched previously and the tacking margin along the back edges is already torn, thinned, or stapled through multiple times, there is no reliable grip left for the fabric to transmit tension from. Third, old, brittle grounds, particularly lead-white oil grounds on linen painted before roughly 1920, can crack under even modest increases in tension. A ground that already shows a fine craquelure network is at real risk. In these cases, keying does more harm than the slack it was meant to correct.

Signs that a full re-stretch over new bars is the right call

Bring the painting to a framer or conservator when you see any of the following. The stretcher bars have a visible bow: place a straight-edge along each bar and look for a gap at the centre. Anything over three millimetres on a bar shorter than one metre indicates a structural problem. The corners have separated or the tenons have split. The tacking margin, the inch or so of canvas wrapped around to the back, is frayed, torn, or no longer long enough to grip with pliers during re-stretching. The painting has deformations that are not gentle ripples but actual creases or folds, which can indicate the canvas has been rolled or improperly stored. And finally, if the paint layer is actively flaking or cupping along the weave, any mechanical tension adjustment should wait until a conservator has consolidated the surface, because re-stretching before stabilisation can accelerate loss.

What a professional re-stretch actually involves

New stretcher bars are cut to the original size or, if the original bars are salvageable, cleaned and re-jointed. The canvas is removed from the old bars using a palette knife or thin spatula, working from the tacking margin inward and never from the face. The fabric is then positioned on the new bars, tensioned from the centre of each side outward in alternating steps, and secured with stainless steel staples or copper tacks depending on the context and the painting's age. The keys are set but not fully driven at this stage: we allow 48 hours for the fabric to equilibrate before finalising tension. A painting that has been slack for years sometimes relaxes again within the first week, requiring a follow-up adjustment, which is why we ask clients to return for a check rather than assuming the first session is the last word.

Caring for the canvas after the work is done

The single most effective thing an owner can do after re-stretching is manage the environment where the painting lives. A relative humidity between 45 and 55 percent, held as consistently as possible, will slow the cycle of expansion and contraction that causes slack to return. In a domestic setting this means keeping paintings away from exterior walls in winter, away from fireplaces and radiators, and off walls that receive direct afternoon sun. A simple plug-in hygrometer costs very little and gives a real picture of what the painting is experiencing day to day. For works of significant financial or sentimental value, an annual inspection, taking the painting down and checking corner tension and the condition of keys, is a practical habit. Catching a canvas that is just beginning to slacken costs almost nothing to correct; waiting until it has distorted badly costs considerably more.

Re-stretching is not always the answer, and keying is not always enough. The decision rests on understanding what caused the slack and what condition the materials are actually in.
