Miriam Holt opened Frame & Canvas in the spring of 2011 in a narrow unit on Caldwell Street, with a second-hand Morso guillotine, a Fletcher glass cutter, and a waiting list of three people who had heard about her from a local gallery. She had spent the previous eight years working at a framing department inside a large art supply chain, which taught her the volume side of the trade but left her frustrated by the corners that got cut when a job had to be turned around in forty-eight hours. The shop on Caldwell Street was a deliberate move in the opposite direction.

Miriam Holt trained in fine art framing at the London Art College evening programme in 2002 and spent eight years in the framing department at a national art supply chain before opening Frame & Canvas in 2011. During that period she worked on projects for the Caldwell Gallery, the Northgate Auction House, and a private collector in Edinburgh whose collection ran to over two hundred pieces. She cuts moulding most mornings and handles all client consultations for conservation and restoration work. Outside the studio she grows dahlias, reads slowly, and is working through a backlog of unframed prints of her own.
